All about Allisong Smith

Raised in Austin, TX, Allisong Smith began singing for her neighborhood friends in early childhood, performing songs like “Sunshine on My Shoulders” by John Denver ,“I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing” by the Carpenters, as well as the entire soundtrack from The Sound of Music.

In 1989, Allisong introduced her new songwriting project to the public in Lubbock, Texas, while attending Texas Tech University.  She formed a duo with her good friend, Amy Jepson, called Spillway Revival. Fortunately, the good folks of Lubbock enjoyed their performances and the local musicians took them under their wings and gave them a down home music education.  Allisong was often likened to the sound of the great fellow Texan, Nancy Griffith, whose songs and performance style became a pivotal learning point for Allisong.

When she finished her degree plan, Allisong headed back home to Austin, Texas.  There she played with lots of musicians around town and performed with the South Austin Gospel Choir.  She started to attend the Kerrville Folk Festival regularly, volunteering for the full eighteen day experience, where she was even elected to play the staff concert with her bandmates, Shakey Bean and Shakespeare.

By the year 2000, Allisong’s musical journey started taking her outside of the state of Texas.  She hit the road in search of music festivals, coffeehouses, and benefits throughout the U.S. and Canada.  She spent a few months performing just off the Las Vegas Strip and another year in the Appalachian Mountains learning about the Old Mountain Traditionals. All along the way, she served communities with her joyous music and personality.  As well, as playing in a duo called the Blue Belles, with Laura Walker.

Allisong has been honored to play her songs at many festivals and venues such as The Cactus Café, Artz Rib House, The Triple Crown, Houston Woman’s Festival, Grrl by Grrl Fest, Indiegrrl, Kerrville Folk Festival Staff Concert, San Augustine Sassafras Festival, and SWRFA’s In Room Showcases for Handshake Management, Texas Folk Music Federation, Concert in Your Home, and Stauffers Stars (w/ Brian Kalinec)

In 2010 Allisong independently released her first major recording project entitled Seasoned Traveler, produced by Kim Copeland Productions in Nashville, TN.  The title cut “Seasoned Traveler” was a finalist in the 5th Annual Texas Songwriters Cruise Songwriting Competition.  Fan favorite “All Things Will Change” has been played on the Go Girls Music Radio Show and “Spring Fling” was showcased on Ralph’s Back Porch Radio Show during their bluegrass special.

In addition, Allisong went New York City to record several tunes from favorites of the Appalachian mountains, such as Ola Belle Reed, Elizabeth Cotten, and Maybelle Carter with the talented guitar picker, Greg Garing from Eastern Tennessee. Along with that, Allisong and her cousin, Shane Mathews created and ran the El Camino Opry in San Augustine, Texas, where they hosted local musicians at a monthly show, of which Allisong was the Master of Ceremony.

In 2011 Allisong was scheduled to play at the International Folk Alliance showcase rooms of Handshake Management, Anderson Fair, Heart and Hope, and GoGirls Music.  She will also play the Indiegrrl Women in the Arts again, this time on the Main Stage and in the Songwriter’s Showdown.  In addition to performances, Allisong is recording songs by the great songwriter Tim Henderson and co-writing songs with many strong writers.

After earning her Bachelor’s Degree from Texas Tech University and gaining teacher’s certification in Language, Theatre, and Fine Arts, Allisong continued her education and involvement in the Arts through her memberships in several Associations over the years, which include the North American Folk Alliance, Americana Music Association, Texas Folk Music Foundation, Nashville Songwriters Association International, and Go Girls Music.

In 2015, Allisong played a bit more, joining Nancy Scott’s songwriters circle at Patsy’s Cowgirl Saloon and play around Bastrop with friends and at Open Mics. This was a brief time back out in the scene, as she had professional goals in the counseling field that she was working to achieve that too her time and attention.

Returning from the time off to earn her Master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling and working in the field full-time for many years, Allisong has re-emerged onto the music scene as of 2025.  She is writing new songs and performing at local venues around Austin, while also running a mental health counseling practice as a Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor on the side.

To encourage community among women who wanted to learn to play music with others, Allisong formed a musical group in Bastrop, Texas called Eunice, that wrote songs, rehearsed together, and eventually booked and played gigs in the local area during 2025.  Now, having moved back to Austin, TX, she is starting to meet with women in this area in an effort to continue the work of facilitating community for those who want to learn to write songs and play music together.

With new found freedom after retiring from the public school system as a school counselor, Allisong is starting to travel more and is exploring the many songwriter’s festivals around. In addition, during 2026, she started going back into the studio to professionally record more of her original songs.  If you get a chance, check out Allisong Smith’s songs on any streaming channel or catch her live performances.
